OUWIHC train twice per week: Monday night (12am-1am) and Wednesday (11pm-12:30am) inbetween the Under 19s and the Alternatives (mixed University students playing half-ice hockey with lots of teams and no kit). We are the only British University ice hockey team of either sex to compete in an official league.

Why 1885 on the crest? Well okay, it's not about women's hockey, but it is the start of hockey at Oxford University which makes it a significant date for both teams. "The OUIHC is the world's second oldest surviving club."

Spirit of the game went to 75 (Oxford) and 21 (Cambridge).
Player of the match went to 13 (Oxford) and 1 (Cambridge).

Stevenage ice must be cheap. The ice was cut before and after the warm up and in between each of the three twenty minute periods. The game was fast and furious with Oxford dominating the possession but unable to turn that advantage into goals until the second period. Despite P-R being targeted at every opportunity she was still frequently able to break free with devastating effects. Candice, P-R's opposite number in terms of imports, held her own but didn't come close to dominating the field in the same way. In fact, since 1991 only Diana Fox (English!) and P-R have been able to literally skate rings around and through the opposition. Memorable events were the Cambridge net-minder kicking the puck into the goal (allowing P-R's sixth goal to be scored from behind the net), Zoe punching the Cambridge player who was holding her (resulting in 2 minutes each) and the refs calling an offside while the puck was still in the neutral zone.

Varsity Match Report: 9/3/97 (by Jonathan Shanklin)

Crowd 150. Oxford pressure began from the start, and Oxford's star player soon put the puck in the net; however there was a quick reply from the Cambridge first line. Play flowed both ways with fast breaks from Oxford's Stark and Cambridge's Yucca. The play steadily becoming more physical and the refs let just about everything go. Supporters from both sides were vociferous, though there did seem to be some supporters from Oxford who probably wouldn't get a first in English. There were some good poke checks and glove saves from the Cambridge goallie and the period ended tied.

Oxford again exerted strong pressure in the first couple of minutes of the second period, but Cambridge responded strongly until Stark broke away and scored on a defensive mix up. Determination from Cambridge kept the game within reach at the close of the period.

In the third period once again Oxford started strongly and two quick goals by Stark seemed to seal things, especially when the Cambridge goallie suffered a knee injury at 47:50. Despite talk of dressing another player, she was eventually able to continue. This prompted Cambridge to greater efforts and two goals by Yuca were sandwiched by one from Stark who rounded things off with a 7th four minutes from the close.

Spirit of the Game awards went to Cambridge 21, Candice Yuca for determination throughout the game and Oxford 75 Charlotte Richards for her team play. MOM awards went to Cambridge net-minder Karen Alexander and Oxford No 13, Paula-Rose Stark who could easily have gained a place on the Men's team with her fluent skating and shooting and was the difference between the two teams.

Town v Gown Result: Drew 3 - 3 (Won 6 -3 in unofficial rematch)

Varsity Match Report: 23/2/91 (by Jonathan Shanklin)

Cambridge entered the Blade Runner rink at Milton Keynes as the underdogs, they left triumphant having lifted the Varsity Cup by a 5-1 scoreline.

Travelling for over an hour to get ice time and returning to Cambridge at 3.30 in the morning is a hard fact of life for the Cambridge team. Oxford, with a rink on their doorstep have it a little easier, but the hours are still pretty unsociable. This year, Oxford were the hot favourites, their team playing in the National Women's League and nine of the girls had played in last years varsity match. Cambridge on the other hand had never played a match as a team, and only two girls were playing from last year. They did, however, have an ace up the sleeve in Charlotte Joslin who played defence with the Harvard women's team.

The game, three periods of 15 minutes with 5 minute breaks, faced off at 11.30 pm under the watchful eyes of lady ref Zoe Hathaway from Swindon, assisted by two local linesmen. Cambridge coach Jonathan 'Joanne' Shanklin started with the strongest lines on the ice in the hope of scoring a quick goal and was rewarded as Joslin netted unassisted with just 48 seconds on the clock. Another goal two minutes later, again by Joslin, this time on the power play, had Oxford worried, but Jacqui Wong put them on the board after four minutes play. Cambridge's lack of match play showed, with great confusion over who was on which line and when the time keepers failed to put a penalty on the clock, the team received a further penalty for too many men on the ice. However Holly Stander and Tracey Nicholls stood firm in defence and the period drew to a close with no further score.

Cambridge began the second period still shorthanded, but once again Joslin scored after just 24 seconds, this time assisted by the Captain, Caroline Hogue. Play was halted for a while due to what looked to be a nasty injury to Oxford's Sarah Mitchell, but after a chance to get her bearings she was able to skate off the ice to applause from crowd and players. The game swung up and down the ice, but Cambridge's defence proved too strong for Oxford and with four minutes to go in the period, Joslin set up Kiki Thompson for another Cambridge goal.

The final period saw Cambridge's beginners gaining in confidence, and although Oxford threw all their efforts against them they couldn't break through. With 4.29 to go, Joslin again showed her play making ability, setting up Hogue who put the puck in the net for the team's fifth goal. The final minutes saw the team short handed again, when Vanessa Proctor was called for charging, however Oxford failed to penetrate the rookie defense line of Sigal Earn and Judith Archbold.

The final hooter blew and an elated Cambridge team took to the ice to congratulate goallie Lisa Goodhall. Man of the match awards went to Oxford's Ellen Rowntree who made many attempts at the Cambridge goal but just failed to net and to Charlotte Joslin for her stunning skating display and generous team play.
