WAGNER'S WALK

Creators: Pat Mills & Lozano
17 episodes: 1979

One of the best stories to appear in Tornado, it has been suggested that this was a follow-up to Hellman of Hammer Force, which had earlier appeared in the IPC comics Action and Battle Picture Weekly, with the lead characters' names changed. The hero of this story was Major Kurt Wagner - no relation to that nightcrawling fellow in X-Men - who, in 1945, joins the ranks of two million former German soldiers captured by the Soviet army and put to work in Russian labor camps. After three years, Wagner and two associates make an audacious bid for freedom, and a 2500 mile journey to India. It gets a little credibility-straining in places, but it's a fine yarn, and one worth a reread.

Reprinted? This series has not been reprinted. You'll need the original Tornado comics.

Wagner's Walk, 17 episodes, Tornado # 1-7 and 10-19 (Mar. to Sep. 1979). Story by "R.E. Wright" (Pat Mills), art by Lozano (pts 1-7) and Mike White (pts 8-17).

WALTER THE WOBOT

Character created by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra
20 episodes: 1978-1981

Judge Dwedd's wobot sidekick got his own series that appeared sporadically on the back page. Walter was destroyed in the Dredd story "Destiny's Angels" (progs 281-288). Rebuilt later, Dredd eventually sent him packing in an unpublished story, and appeared in two specials and in the Dredd story "Inferno," a shadow of his former self. In the Dredd Megazine, Walter tried to lead a robot revolution and was sentenced to thirty years, but he got a reprieve of sorts in prog 1169.

Reprinted? No, although a Walter-themed collection in an Extreme Edition isn't a bad idea.
