ULYSSES SWEETCreators: Grant Morrison & Johnny Johnston3 episodes: 1987 Morrison's first stab at a series after several Future Shocks isn't all that good, but the second one does contain some truly horrible puns. Reprinted? The two-part story eventually appeared as a "back up" in the American Sam Slade Robo-Hunter comic. |

UNIVERSAL SOLDIERCreators: Alan McKenzie & Will Simpson27 episodes: 1987, 1990-91 This is a pretty complex series, and really requires several reads to catch the intricacies in the format. The second series was announced in prog 554, but took over two years to show up. The third series reintroduced the old Fleetway hero Tim Kelly, whose series Kelly's Eye ran in Knockout in the 1960s and Vulcan in the mid-70s. Kelly's Eye later got a run of its own in 2000 AD. Reprinted? This series has never properly been reprinted. The American Bad Company comic used it as a backup, but you're best off with the original progs. |

VECTOR 13anthology series67 episodes: 1995-1998 Hosted by a cadre of Men in Black, Vector 13 effectively replaced three different series: Tharg's Future Shocks, Tharg's Terror Tales and the sporadic Tales from Beyond Science. Like that last series, it posits that the stories you're reading are true, and are recapped by the narration with little dialogue. At first, this could present several frightening, well-done stories with fortean backgrounds, with "Circle of Evil" and "Shadrach" in particular being great successes. However, the series became a victim of its own conspiracy hype. Appearing as it did when The X Files became a hit in Britain and the BBC screened the Fox "alien autopsy" film, the whole "shadow government" thing became in vogue for a while, and for several months in 1996 and 1997, the unthinkable happened and the Men in Black temporarily replaced Tharg as editors of 2000 AD and not only appeared as characters in one of their own cases (prog 999), but also towards the end of Black Light's brief run in late 1996. Some different Men in Black, cut from the same UFO conspiracy cloth, also featured in Kid CyBorg. A backlash was inevitable, as the conspiracy fad quickly faded, and the one-shot torch was passed to Pulp Sci-Fi in the summer of '98. Reprinted? This series has never been reprinted. You'll need the original progs. |

VICTOR DRAGOCreators: Chris Lowder and Mike Dorey, based on a character created by Harry Blyth11 episodes: 1979
It is possible that 2000 AD's sister comic Tornado was cursed from the outset. Originally, the editors wanted to feature new comic adventures of the Victorian detective Sexton Blake. Exactly how many kids in 1979 were in a rush to read new escapades of a genius adventurer created for penny papers in 1893 by Harry Blyth, we cannot guess, but a rights dispute - the BBC had made a Sexton Blake TV movie in 1978 - meant a last-minute revamping of the completed Sexton Blake comic episodes into something called Victor Drago. The editors actually missed a couple of Blake references as they took the white paint to the finished pages. (At one point, Victor Drago's Rolls Royce, the Silver Cloud, is referred to instead as the Grey Panther, Blake's car.) In addition to the comic episodes, Drago also appeared in text adventures. Since this site does not focus on text stories, these are not included in the episode guide, but for the sake of completeness, these were "Victor Drago and the Flask of Doom" (Tornado 8-10), "Victor Drago and the Horror of the Mummy's Curse" (Tornado 11-13), "Victor Drago and the Killer from Goblin Loch" (Tornado 17-19), "Victor Drago and Scarlip the Gangster" (Tornado 20-22) and "The Hand of Horror" (Tornado Summer Special). John C. Crummond's page about the series at Blakiana: The Sexton Blake Resource was useful in providing background for this entry; readers curious about Sexton Blake should visit the site! Reprinted?
